As the landscape slowly emerges from the pre dawn gloom, I’m startled from my reverie by a sudden flurry of activity, the culprit revealing itself to be a Brown Trout in the river below.
Glacial waters begin its slow exit from Lake Bohinj beneath the ancient stone arch on which I stand, the gentle gurgle that is the Sava Bohinjka and its steady rhythm which keeps the silence permanently at bay.
As the sun makes its slow rise, the gentle slopes that mark the foothills of the Julian Alps become more distinct, patches of which lie visible between low cloud which hugs its curves like balls of cotton.
Light and dark, grassy meadows and lush woods, eventually giving way to the Alps themselves and its jagged, snow kissed peaks, high above.
The air is crisp, the day full of promise and I haven’t even sampled breakfast…
“Autumn comes early to the foot of the Slovenian Alps…
This is old country. Every autumn mellows it a little more, in aeternum, each beginning with the same three colors: a green landscape, two or three yellow leaves falling through a gray afternoon..”
Elizabeth Kostova, The Historian
“As you travel around Slovenia,
Think of the tales the hills could tell you. Share the awe of natural wonder; Tread the trails…”
Jacqueline Widmar Stewart
Straddling the borders of modern Slovenia and Italy, the Julian Alps are a land of wild places with an equally wild history.
Named for that fabled Italian Caesar, much of the range sits on the Slovenian side of todays border, its highest peak (Triglav at 2,864m) serving as a source pride to the nation, so much so that it serves as their coat of arms.
It is a land bloodied by war too, with no fewer than a dozen battles on the Isonzo front during the Great War, long abandoned fortifications dot the region, which remains the final resting place of almost 1.7 million people…
Today, these lands remain rich in natural beauty, the scars of war tempered by time, and the force that is nature and its ability to soften almost any landscape with green.
Turquoise glacial rivers run through its valleys, forests dot its slopes, and paths that once were trod by these soldiers, lives tragically lost in the folly of war, are now our passage into the mountains themselves.
Amidst this landscape of natural beauty and tragic history, we find ourselves a home with a touch of luxury, Hotel Bohinj.
A stones throw from the lake of the same name, think a beautiful forested setting, the inspiring Julian Alps as a backdrop (and playground), gorgeous rooms that highlight, whilst complementing the landscape, and sumptuous dining.
Be sure to sample the Bohinj Cake, an ancient recipe revived and exclusive to the hotel!
The Journey
Check into your hotel and meet your other travel companions. Free time to yourself.
After a delicious breakfast we will start our road trip to lake Bohinj. Our first stop is Vintgar Gorge. There we will meander along a raised platform bolted to the side of the gorge, affording wonderful views of an ancient eco system of pristine waters and luminous moss.
From the gorge we head to the famed Lake Bled where we will visit the castle via boat and take lunch overlooking this idyllic watery wonder.
From Bled we continue for another 30 minutes to lake Bohinj, our home for the next week. (B,D)
Our first hike for our journey is the Via Alpina Red Trail. This trail makes up a part of the 4000km Via Alpina Trail that runs from Trieste to Monaco.
We will take a chair lift to the start of the trail before heading off along a well maintained path which takes up toward the ridgeline of Mount Vogel. Spectacular views will be had down to Lake Bohinj and south toward the Tolminske Ravine.
We will have lunch at a small eatery along this ridgeline. From lunch we take another chairlift down to the valley floor. Total hiking time should be about 5 hours. (B,L,D)
Today we head up high above Lake Bohinj on the opposite side to yesterday’s trek. Today is all about lakes, small, mountain lakes surrounded by conifers and high mountain cliffs. Absolutely spectacular.
After a small transfer up to the trail head, we head out through conifer forests for an hour or so before emerging at Lake Jezero. From there we continue along the trail until we reach a small natural depression that overlooks the Triglav National Park. Here, we will have a picnic lunch before continuing our journey around Mt Griva and back to the road head. Total walking time is about 5 hours. (B,L,D)
Our 14km loop takes us back up the along the ridgelines of the western end of Lake Bohinj. We will then loop toward Dvojno Jezero lake, one of several highland lakes and tarns in the area.
The trail will then loop back around down toward the high cliff overlooking Bohinj. We will either head back toward our starting point OR head down into the valley via Savica Waterfall.
Then it’s back to our wonderful hotel for an afternoon Spa perhaps. (B,L,D)
Today we will do something completely different, to experience the Julian Alps from river level, literally.
We will transfer to the Soca River and whitewater raft the beautiful Soca River in an 8 person inflatable raft, with our well trained and professional river guide.
We will start at the Boka waterfall (or nearby Srpenica village) and travel all the way to the village Trnovo ob Soči.
The journey down river takes about 1.5 hours and we cover a distance of between 7 and 10kms. (B,D)
After 4 days of hiking or rafting, you may want to put your feet up for a relax around the lake. A gentle stroll along the shore or perhaps a massage in the spa facilities at the hotel? For those who want a bit more activity, maybe another hike. It is up to you, this is a free day to explore, unwind or keep going. (B,D)
Our last hike of our Journey and today we head for Mostnica Waterfall. Turquoise water abounds in this wonderful valley with strange rock formations, taking on the appearance of animals such as the Elephant (you will know what we mean when you see it). On a warm day, this trail is lovely and cool, culminating in a pretty waterfall at the end of the valley, the Mostnica Waterfall. We return home via forest trails, through small hamlets. (B,L,D)
After breakfast we take a private transfer back to Ljubljana. In the afternoon, we will head out for a 2.5 hour town tour, culminating in a group dinner as a farewell to our brilliant staycation in Slovenia. (B,D)
Today we all depart hopefully off to another Italian destination or back home. (B)
Note: For those that wish to stay extra nights in Verona we can arrange this. We can also arrange for ongoing train tickets to and from Verona.

It is so refreshing to hike beautiful mountain trails that few others have heard of. Added to this, is the incredible food, so different to Slovenia’s neighbours, but equally delicious. Slovenia’s compact size allows us to see so much without having to travel for hours on end and its position in Europe has given it a history that expresses itself in unique architecture and quaint villages and towns. Slovenia and the Julian Alps are a must for those who love nature. I love it!

Accommodation
We will be employing luxury accommodation throughout this expedition. The hotel in Ljubljana is located in the center of town.
The hotel on the shores of Lake Bohinj is Hotel Bohinj, a luxury spa hotel with amazing accommodation, meals, and views of the area. This will be our home for 8 days. We will unpack our bags here on Day 2 and repack them again on Day 9.
The Best Time To Travel To The Julian Alps
The best time to walk the Julian Alps is mid-June to the end of July and then September. June has fewer people and the flowers start to bloom then and into July. August is holiday time in Europe and trails, even in Slovenia, can get busy. September sees the trails free up again.
Meals On The Trip
No matter where we take you, food is an important component of any No Roads Expeditions trip. Europe is no exception.
All meals are outlined within the itinerary.
Breakfast: Breakfast buffet with fresh bread rolls and croissants, bacon and eggs, and a large selection of cold meats and cheeses, home-made juices, cakes and muesli
Lunch: These are a mix of packed lunches and Mountain Huts. Picnic lunches are supplied however lunches taken in mountain huts or on days that lunches are not supplied are to be paid directly to the place of purchase. These meals are usually between 10 Euro and 15 Euro.
Dinner: 5-course gourmet dinner with a sumptuous buffet with fresh salads, vegetables, and antipasti. Also a cheeseboard with local cheeses and fruit corner.
The Julian Alps must be one of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever travel through. However not many people have heard of them or know them well so you may have a few questions for us. The following are the most common however if you have another question please let us know or the answer may be found in our Trip Notes section.
What's The Whitewater Rafting Like?
One of the activities on this journey is whitewater rafting on the Soca River. This fully guided rafting trip will take us down the incredibly beautiful Soca River, renowned for its crystal clear water and fluorescent turquoise blue colouring.
Our raft will hold 8-10 people and is guided by a local rafting guide. Helmets and life vests as supplied. The journey takes about 1.5 hours.
The rapids are Grade II and III which means they are not too technical, but do provide us with a bit of fun while seeing another side of Slovenia.
If you fall out, support kayaks are used to rescue you and either bring you back to the raft or to shore.
This is a great day out and everyone is encouraged to participate. However if you do not wish to participate, that is fine.
